The End of an Era

~Nursing Benji at the ocean last summer.~

This morning I nursed Benji for the last time. It is truly bittersweet...he's 31 months old....it is time for both of us. What a crazy journey this breastfeeding road has been. I've been pregnant and or nursing for 6 years this month. 6 Years! That's longer than I was in college for! For 6 years my body has been shared with at least one baby! I am ready to have my breasts be mine again....to wear pretty bras & to wear any top I want regardless of how easily accessible my boobs are!

I always knew I would nurse my babies....for me it was a no brainer: free, always available, better for the envrionment (no packaging on these tatas!) and best of all better for my babes! What I didn't realize is how nursing my babies would lead me to new friendships, a complete respect for my body, attachment parenting, and being a full-fledged lactivist! I never thought I'd nurse in all the places I have: the backseat of a van in Ireland (leaning over the carseat!), every restaurant in laconia, planes, trains, boats, dressing rooms, the library, the park and basically anywhere I was...I've pumped at work....I've pumped at home...I've pumped in Paris, Barcelona and Madrid....I've even paid to use the facilities to pump at the Gare de Lyon in Paris.....and than sadly flushed it down the toilette. My breasts and the milk they produced have become so commonplace in my life....everyone has had more than their share of an eyeful.

I've never been harassed out in public....the only people who have ever harassed me are my own children for more...or to have them both out at once (which can be tricky--not to mention chilly in cold weather)! I've had those quiet nursing moments where you stare at your growing baby and amaze at how you are nourishing him, I've woken in the night every 3 hours for 6 years to soothe a little one back to sleep with warm milk and a mama-nipple, I've calmed tantrums, eased booboos, and re-connected over a nursing spell. Those days are behind me. I have fond memories. I am ready to move forward...

As for Benjamin....he's given up the days with little fuss....I am apprehensive for the night....he seems at peace at being the "beeeeg boy" now. For awhile I was nervous because he kept telling me he was the "babeeeee." What he doesn't understand now, is that he will always be my babeeeeee. He doesn't need to nurse anymore to show it.

Let's go fly a kite...

Daddy is home! Daddy is hoooommmmmmeeeeee!

And he came bearing gifts...among the loot (and it was good! Wait to you see Mia's chinese silk dress...or my pearls....or the kids robot panda! Yes I said Robot Panda....ha!) were two kites. The day was a little overcast and windy this morning....so we headed to the fields close to the lake and took to kite flying. It was so fun...I'm not kidding....it was kind of thrilling, in that "we are all together, life is good" way. It is the little things....like watching Mia & Benji run after Tom, or the quiet after they go to sleep (that I'm enjoying now) that help balance out those "other" days...

*sigh*

We're in the midst of another long trip....Daddy is on the other side of the planet. I'm struggling...the kids are struggling. His absence is palbable...Mia is constantly on the verge of tears, Benji has a cold and is cranky & me? Well, I feel as though I have 6 plates in the air and with one slight misstep they will all crash to the floor. I'm tired....and worn from being the one and only parent. Last night I was not patient. I was grumpy and short tempered. I'm trying to be better today...5 more sleeps.

Daddy can't even read my blog....it is blocked in China.

Encyclopedia of Me!

It has been too long since I did an installment of my Encyclopedia of Me!

Here is H:

H is for...

:: Hannah....we met the first day of kindergarten....and through thick and thin we've been tight...there are some parts of my life I don't know if I could've gotten through without her....now she needs to move back to nh....stat!

:: Home...I like to be home, puttering around the house, in the garden. But when my house is too messy....I like to leave it....the cleaning gnomes never show up though!

:: Heartache... broken hearts? I've had 2...I sometimes think I feel things more deeply than other people....or maybe I just wear my heart on my sleeve. I also never forget you, if I've loved you.

:: Hot & Humid weather....I don't like it .... I don't like it all. The summer I was pregnant with Benji (he was born in september), I would just drag my chair into the lake and sit there...it must have been a funny sight.

Hmmmm, I think that's all folks....

Reunited...

And it feels so good.

My husband travels for work. As much a 7 (10 ish day) trips a year. I just finished a stint as a single mother....I'm so glad I am not really a single parent. It is exhausting...even with the great help I get from my sister, mother and mother-in-law, it is hard to be the (only) parent.

It is getting easier...perhaps because the children are a bit older, perhaps because I am just getting used to it...but I have a few tricks up my sleeve as well. If anyone is going to be going alone even for a couple of days, here is my advice:

-take care of yourself....how can you take care of anyone else, if you don't take care of yourself? Pre-schedule a massage, facial, pedicure, and pamper yourself! I had a facial last week, that was sent straight from the heavens...

-schedule alone time....do not feel guilty ladies! Drop the kiddos off at Grammies or pick them up 30 minutes later than usual and grab a cup of coffee and read! (do not use this time to clean!) They won't even notice! Last week, I drank a frappacinno and read Voque on my deck before picking up the children....I was totally re-energized to be Super-Mama afterwards!

-Befriend your dvd player...2 words: movie-night....it feels special & different for them....and it is easy and special for you!

-Easy dinners--easy clean up!

-speaking of cleaning...don't sweat the small stuff! Are the kids clean? Are they wearing clean clothes? Good to go!

-Snuggly bedtimes!

-Schedule things to look forward to: dinner at friends, new sneaker shopping day, visits to Mémé, extra trips to the park...

-Count the sleeps!

Absence makes the heart grow fonder....well, honey, I'm awfully fond of you.

:: jeggings.....jean-leggings.....so soooo comfy and stylish! Perfect for a weekend of chasing my Benji & Mia!

:: such a great turnout in enrollments for my next trip to France & Spain....awesome! I'm so excited! Dreaming of Provence....

Easter

How fortunate we were to have such beautiful weather this Easter! We awoke early and checked out what the Bunny had brought...ate chocolate, cinnamon buns and donned our Easter finery and headed over to Grammie & Poppie. We are lucky to have such nice extended family and friends to celebrate with. TG brought the most beautiful Grand Vin de Bordeaux (merci mille fois TG!) and our friends Amy, Chatrick and Emerson joined us. Emerson, 4, is a great playmate for Mia....they play so well together, it is great! Auntie, Luke and Mimi were threre as well. So much excitement eased the pain of Daddy's absence a little bit...7 more sleeps!

The Cutest Expressionist...

Benji had the chance to do some painting with Daddy recently...

Eat your heart out Van Gogh....he's the cutest neo-expressionist I've ever seen.....
